What is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is the active ingredient of Finacea, Aziderm cream or gel among several other brands. It is an organic compound which is found naturally in wheat, rye and barley. It aids in quick renewal of the skin thereby reducing pimple and blackheads. It also kills acne and rosacea causing bacteria and hence it is used to treat acne and rosacea.
Azelaic acid may also be used to treat conditions not mentioned above.

Important Information about Azelaic Acid

You should not use Azelaic acid medication if you are allergic to azelaic acid or propylene glycol. Don’t apply azelaic acid medication on sensitive areas like eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, or vagina. Also don’t apply this medication on sun burned, wind burned, dry, irritated, chapped, or bruised skin. You may apply after these conditions have subsided.
Leave the surface exposed where you apply azelaic acid and don’t cover it as it may lead to more azelaic acid absorption into your skin and causing unwanted reactions. The results of using azelaic acid medication may not be seen for up to 4 weeks. Continue using the medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor. If your symptoms don’t improve even after 12 weeks, tell your doctor right away.

Before using Azelaic Acid

Don’t use azelaic acid cream or gel if you are allergic to azelaic acid or propylene glycol. For safe use of this medication during pregnancy or breast feeding, consult your doctor.

How should I use Azelaic Acid?

Use azelaic acid cream or gel exactly as directed by your doctor. Don’t alter the course of the medication from the prescribed course in any way. Also don’t exceed the period of use for which it was prescribed.
Before applying the cream or the gel, wash your hand thoroughly and dry it. Clean the area of application with a gentle soap or soap less cleansing solution and dry the area with a soft towel. Remember not to rub it aggressively or it can deteriorate the condition further. Then apply the proper amount of medication to the affected area. Remember to leave the affected area exposed.
Azelaic acid medication is applied twice per day normally – once in morning and before bedtime. Again, your doctor’s advice stands tall. If you have too much burning, dryness, or irritation, you may be advised to use the medication just once per day.

What should I avoid while taking Azelaic Acid?

Don’t apply other medications on the affected areas where you have applied azelaic acid cream or gel. Apply only if your doctor tells you to do so. Also avoid using skin products which may be harsh on your skin and cause irritation like harsh soaps or cleanser, or skin products containing alcohol, lime, spices, or astringents.
There may also be some diet restrictions imposed on you by your doctor like avoiding spicy foods alcoholic drinks and other such food items which may cause flushing or skin rashes while using azelaic acid.
